THE HISTORY

Wall Street Suites is located 2 blocks to historic downtown Bend; however, until the early 1900’s it was considered to be the outskirts of town.  As Bend grew and tourism increased, hotels and motels became more abundant.

The Plaza Motel

ResizedImage300193-post1According to records found in the Deschutes Historical Museum, the original motel was built during the 1950’s on what was originally Hill Street.  Formally known as The Plaza Motel, it accommodated out-of-towners who enjoyed coming back to the motel after a long day of skiing, motorcycling, or socializing with friends and relatives.  Many Bend residents recall staying at The Plaza Motel as a child before moving to Bend as an adult, and their stories range from humorous to warmhearted with a common thread of adventure mixed in to each.

The excitement of growth and tourism over the years has made this location a prime spot for businesses.  Guests enjoyed having The Bend Bulletin nearby when it moved in across the street during the 1960’s. and having the local county buildings on the other side gave a sense of security and importance to The Plaza Motel.  Additionally, being across the street from Pioneer Park, one of Bend’s oldest parks, means guests have enjoyed this 5.5 acre riverfront property for many years.  Guests of The Plaza Motel, now Wall Street Suites, continue to reserve Pioneer Parks’ covered building for reunions, weddings, and other celebrations, and appreciate the ease of access from the motel grounds to all Bend has to offer.

Transformation and Rebirth

Fortunately, the current owners saw the need to rebuild its lost heritage and decided to buy the property.  In 2012- 2013, they decided to gut and rebuild the motel from the inside out.  The goal was to renovate the current building and transform it into a motel that included all the amenities of a luxury hotel, while keeping the historical and beloved motel motif.

The process was both tedious and exciting. The current owners are more than pleased with the outcome and enjoyed using some of their own privately collected materials, such as the individual woods and stones used in each room, to decorate and personalize the motel.  As one owner said, “Watching this place come back to life, seeing it as it was to what it is now, makes all the hard work worth it.”

As one observer said, “Wall Street Suites is like a destination within itself.  It is a perfect addition to the Bend community, combining quiet and peaceful rooms with the freedom to gather around the community fire pit and meet other travelers.  I see Wall Street Suites as a prototype for the 21st century luxury motel.” It is quickly becoming one of the best places to stay in Bend Oregon.

bookNowWhen asked why rebuild rather than tear down and start over, one owner explained, “We are proud to see how it has evolved.  It has turned into a labor of love, and we have enjoyed the challenge of transforming it into a place of life and fun.  We look forward to having pride of ownership for years to come through offering personal touches and services other local accommodations can’t provide.”
